THIS QUOTE SPEAKS TO MY SOUL
Okay and now in all seriousness I will talk about Truthwitch by Susan Dennard.
This book has magic, actual magic. Like I stated in my tweet here, Susan Dennard has put real magic into this book. I love this book from start to finish. I love the characters, I love the world building, I love the setting, I love it all.
Here is a summary from goodreads:
On a continent ruled by three empires, some are born with a “witchery”, a magical skill that sets them apart from others.
In the Witchlands, there are almost as many types of magic as there are ways to get in trouble—as two desperate young women know all too well.
Safiya is a Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lie. It’s a powerful magic that many would kill to have on their side, especially amongst the nobility to which Safi was born. So Safi must keep her gift hidden, lest she be used as a pawn in the struggle between empires.
Iseult, a Threadwitch, can see the invisible ties that bind and entangle the lives around her—but she cannot see the bonds that touch her own heart. Her unlikely friendship with Safi has taken her from life as an outcast into one of reckless adventure, where she is a cool, wary balance to Safi’s hotheaded impulsiveness.
Safi and Iseult just want to be free to live their own lives, but war is coming to the Witchlands. With the help of the cunning Prince Merik (a Windwitch and ship’s captain) and the hindrance of a Bloodwitch bent on revenge, the friends must fight emperors, princes, and mercenaries alike, who will stop at nothing to get their hands on a Truthwitch.
One of the main reasons that I read this book was the leading female friendship. This kind of friendship is rare in YA. Most of what I have read is girl vs girl but this is girl and girl vs everyone else. I find this unique and inspiring. Above all, Safi and Iseult value each other more than anything that was thrown at them. Their relationship is powerful because they are thread sisters. Connected with a deep and powerful bond, Safi and Iseult are bounded to protect each other.
The world building was different. There are a lot of sinister elements to this world. The bloodwitches, honestly, are terrifying. I find it unique that there are different witches for most elements. We meet Aeduan, one of the many interesting characters in this book, who is a bloodwitch. His story is interesting and his relationship with Iseult and Safi.
The ending was thrilling. There is so much more to come that I want the next book now, like this instant. I haven't read an ending like that in a while. I want the second book now please.
This is a fantastic high fantasy novel and I highly recommend this book. I can't wait for the next book.
