Zoey Valentine is concerned with two things: surviving the multitude of self-defense classes her dad makes her take and avoiding Ash Matthews.
That is, until the Z virus hits, wiping out a third of the population in a matter of weeks. If that weren’t frightening enough, the bodies of the victims disappear and suddenly reappear, awakened from their dead state. They're faster, smarter, and they work together to get the one thing they crave, human flesh.
The United States is in a panic and then the government decides the unthinkable: to bomb every major city overrun with the awakened.
Now Zoey is on the run, with her dad and Ash, desperate to find a place of safety amongst the ruined remains of the country.
Do you hear me yelling because I am yelling. I can't describe how long I have waited for a zombie book, a GOOD zombie book. And not just the dull, dragging of the feet and limbs zombies, but the zombies in this book are nearly alive with the critical thinking ability like humans. From start to finish I have enjoyed every second of it.
The zombies were interesting, pale blue skin with black eyes and razor sharp teeth. But the most interesting aspect of this novel was the reason why these zombies aka "The Awakened" were created. I felt like the reason was justified but then again it was evil. You have to read the book to figure out why these creatures were created.
I really loved Zoey. She is not one of those female protagonists that dwell on romance or appearances but rather what makes her real, human. She believes more about emotions and beliefs rather than appearance and I highly respect this. Also, Ash isn't one of those godly-like male protagonists that all the females swoon over. He has to prove his worth to Zoey. Finally a male protagonist who has to work to be appreciated rather than being appreciated by his looks.
This book was perfectly paced. The twist and turns was phenomenal that I stayed up very late one day trying to finish this book. I just wanted more. I need book 2 now!!!!! I can't wait till December thats too long for a book reader's heart. :(
This book is a perfect zombie book. I'm sad that there isn't more YA zombie books but I really loved The Awakened, it was perfect for me.
